PURPOSE:To analyze gender differences in patients with incipient psychosis attending a new, intensive and specialized early intervention Programme(PAE-TPI), in terms of a set of performance measures grouped into 5 domains: accessibility, appropriateness, continuity, effectiveness, and safety. METHOD:Naturalistic study of consecutive cases attended in PAE-TPI programme, implemented in two community mental health centers of Barcelona(Spain), in the period 2007-2015. Inclusion criteria: people in early stages of psychosis or considered to be in at-risk mental state(ARMS) according to CAARMS criteria;age 14-35 years;having less than five years of threshold psychotic symptom evolution. A descriptive analysis was carried out, using the mean and median statistics for continuous variables and the frequencies and percentages to discrete variables(SPSS v.19). Paired t tests or Chi-square tests were used in order to study gender differences in performance measures. RESULTS:A total of 334 patients were recruited, 140 ARMS(n=55 women), 115 First-Episode of Psychosis (FEP)(n=43 women), 79 Critical Period (CP)(n=29 women). In the ARMS group, statistically significant gender differences were observed in continuity domain, with a higher proportion of men remaining in the program at 1-year follow-up [(64.6%)vs.(35.4%),p=0.040], and security domain, with a higher proportion of men without monitoring of adverse effects of pharmacological treatment [(87.5%)vs.(12.5%),p=0.009]. CONCLUSION:In FEP and CP groups, no gender differences were obtained in any performances measures. In the ARMS group, the results showed gender differences in continuity and security domains. These results reveal that gender is not an influential variable in most of the performance measures of the PAE-TPI programme, especially in patients with a psychosis threshold.
